What is it: A Partnership Certificate functions just like a regular Certificate, except you choose to donate your interest earnings to a local nonprofit of your choice.*
How it works:
1. Open a one-year Partnership Certificate with a Member Service Representative at any of our branches. When you open a Partnership Certificate and a regular Certificate you’ll receive a .25% increase on both Certificates. (Ask for our rate sheet for current rates.)

4. Santa Cruz Community Credit Union will notify you of your total interest earned and contributed to your designated local nonprofit.
The Benefits: When you open a Partnership Certificate you are increasing your impact and helping build a healthy community. Your entire balance supports our community investing work and your interest earnings directly help fund your designated nonprofit achieve its mission. Volunteers Needed to Help Low-Income Families
Posted: Wed Dec 6 '06 12:59 pm
-
One hour of your time can boost a low-wage working family's income by as much as $4,500.
The SCCCU in partnership with Project SCOUT, provides free tax assistance to low-income families. By preparing basic tax returns for free, we help these families claim the tax credits they’ve earned. Families use their refund dollars to pay bills, get out of debt, and begin building a savings cushion. Each year our program has a tremendous impact, returning hundreds of thousands of collars to our community.
The SCCCU seeks volunteer tax preparers during the upcoming tax season. No experience is necessary and training is provided.
Taxes aren't your thing? We also need volunteers to welcome clients and Spanish-speaking volunteers to serve as translators.

Internet Scamming (Phishing) Alert!
Posted: Wed Sep 28 '05 11:07 am
-
Phishing Alert!
According to the Anti-Phishing Working Group, the word "phishing" comes
from the analogy that Internet scammers are using email "lures" to "fish"
for passwords and financial data from the sea of Internet users. This
scheme uses e-mails appearing to come from a legitimate company or user
and directs recipients to fake Web sites where they are asked for personal
financial information.
A recent study found that seven out of ten consumers had unintentionally
visited a fake Web site and more than 15 percent of those visiting the web
site admitted to providing sensitive private information including credit
card numbers, checking account information and Social Security numbers.
If you receive or respond to a phishing email and suspect that your
personal information has been "phished" by an unknown source, you should
assume that you either are - or soon will be - the victim of identity
theft, and you should take immediate self defense measures.
If you were lured by a "spoof" of a geniune company or organization, get
in touch with the real company immediately. They may be able to help you
minimize the damage. For example, if you thought you were updating your
credit card information with an online store, and you discovered it wasn't
your online store, call or email the real store at once.
If you provided your credit card information as part of the "phishing"
scheme, contact the customer service department of the institution that
issued your credit card and ask to speak to someone in risk management or
loss prevention.
How to Avoid Phishing Scams
The number of phishing scams sent out to consumers continues to increase
dramatically. While online banking and e-commerce is very safe, you should
be careful about giving out your personal information over the Internet.
The Anti-Phishing Work Group has compiled a list of
recommendations below that you can use to avoid becoming a victim of these
scams.
* Be suspicious of any email with urgent requests for personal
information. Phishers typically include upsetting or exciting (but false)
statements in their emails to get people to react immediately.
*
* Don't use the links in an email to get to any web page if you
suspect the message might not be authentic. Instead, call the company on
the telephone, or log onto the website directly by typing in the Web
address in your browser.
*
* Avoid filling out forms in email messages that ask for personal
financial information. You should only communicate information such as
credit card numbers or account information via a secure website or the
telephone.
*
* Always ensure that you're using a secure website when submitting
credit card or other sensitive information via your Web browser.
* Regularly log into your online accounts. Don't wait a month before
you check each account.
*
* Regularly check your credit and debit statements to ensure that
all transactions are legitimate. If anything is suspicious, contact your
financial institution and all credit card issuers.

INTERNET/EMAIL FRAUD ALERT
Posted: Wed Jul 6 '05 5:17 pm
-
Recently, there have been multiple e-mail fraud attempts, known as "Phishing”, that were initiated via e-mail sent to both the general public and to some credit union members that appeared to be from NCUA. This false e-mail asked for the recipient to click on a link to verify their credit union account registration. If the recipient proceeded to do so, the link directed them to a false website and asked for their credit union account number and PIN, along with other personal information.
NCUA does not ask credit unions members for such personal information. Anyone who receives an e-mail that purports to be from NCUA and asks for account information should consider it to be a fraudulent attempt to obtain their personal account data for an illegal purpose and should not follow the instructions in the e-mail.
If you responded to such an e-mail and provided any confidential account information, please notify the SCCCU immediately of the scheme (425-7708, ext 6). You should also change your account(s) PIN.

Make a Donation to Tsunami Survivors at the SCCCU
Posted: Tue Jan 11 '05 1:53 pm
-
The Santa Cruz Community Credit Union (SCCCU) is accepting donations
for survivors of the recent devastating tidal wave in southern Asia. Kicking off the donation effort is a $10,000 gift from a long-time Santa Cruz Community Credit Union member.
All donations will be forwarded to Save the Children, which has been addressing emergencyand economic development needs in the region for more than thirty years. Save the Children is urgently seeking $5 million in support for its emergency response. Following the recent
disaster, the organization began immediately coordinating its relief efforts in the region and is currently delivering essential supplies of shelter material, food, water, non-food relief items such as clothing, and urgent medical care related to water-borne diseases.
“We chose Save the Children as the recipient because of their proven commitment to the region hardest-hit by the disaster and because of their ability to quickly and effectively mobilize resources to help people in critical need,” explains CEO Ginger McNally.
If you are interested in donating to the survivors of the disasters, please make checks out to Save the Children Tidal Wave Relief Fund and drop them off at either SCCCU branch (324 Front Street in Santa Cruz or 1428 Freedom Boulevard in Watsonville) by January 31, 2005.
Checks may also be mailed to SCCCU, P.O. Box 1877, Santa Cruz, CA 95061-1877.

Although we'd hoped to move our main office more quickly than July 15, we are very happy with the gains we've
achieved with this additional time. The lobby area will utilize
natural light from skylights, reflective illumination, and window
glazing to promote energy efficiency. Electrical lights will be on
automatic controls to be on only when needed. Our total package of
design elements helped us to surpass energy efficiency standards
by 27 per cent. A special program through PG&E, "Savings by Design"
will award both our architect, Teall Messer and the SCCCU with
sizeable incentive payments for the design and implementation our
particular plan.
Our interior design consultant, Wayne Palmer, is finding
eco-friendly interior finish alternatives for our use including
carpet and other floor and wall coverings. Our General Contractor,
Bob Mollman from Kase Pacific Construction, was able to recycle
the demolition materials that were extracted from the site even
before our real remodel work began. We've chosen steel for
framing our floors and walls in large part because it is composed
of a high percentage of recycled materials... namely used cars!
For our elevator, our plan uses vegetable oil as an alternative
to hydraulic fluid to avoid possible soil contamination in the
future. We have given consideration to using both materials
that are recycled and/or those that are recyclable after their
useful life in our building.
Our new 15,000 sq foot main branch office will have a bathroom
for member and includes a changing table. One of the waiting
areas will include a toddler play table that supervised children
may enjoy. We'll have a large community meeting room with
bathrooms, two merchant booth teller stations, six standard
teller stations and four ADA sit-down stations for new accounts
and other business. There will be writing surfaces along the
teller waiting line, two self-serve banking stations in the
lobby, and many features that will help our staff serve you
more efficiently than we can in our present Santa Cruz office.

Striving to increase social, economic, and environmental justice
in our community, the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union and its
nonprofit affiliate, Community Ventures, Inc., have created More
Than Just Commerce (MTJC) to promote environmentally, economically,
and socially responsible businesses. More Than Just Commerce connects
responsible consumers with these businesses. Businesses that agree
with the following philosophy become members of the online MTJC
Directory.
Here is the full statement that MTJC business members agree to:
As a member of the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union's and
Community Ventures, Inc's More Than Just Commerce Program, our
business strives to conduct business in a socially just and
environmentally sustainable way. Recognizing this business as
an opportunity to serve the community, we subscribe to the
following principles:
We strive to provide high quality goods and services
at affordable prices while providing respectful customer
service.
We try to minimize the environmental impacts of all
our business activities. We reduce, reuse, recycle, and buy
recycled as much as possible; minimize non-recyclable waste;
and properly dispose of all hazardous waste.
We attempt to be fully informed about our suppliers so
that we can work with businesses whose values regarding business
operations are in alignment with our own.
We respect our employees and treat them fairly while
keeping in mind the living wage, helping them be informed about
our services and products, and encouraging them to do all they
can to see that our business is socially and environmentally
responsible.
Finally, we conscientiously consider, as a first priority,
doing business with other (local when and if possible) businesses
that are also aware of impacts they have on society and on
the earth. We support the community by the nature of our
business and/or through charitable giving.
You, our members, are the consumers who responded enthusiastically
to our survey several months ago telling us that a program such
as MTJC would help your efforts to be responsible consumers.
Now, you can support these businesses while you meet your needs.
Learn about these businesses at the Web site:
www.morethanjustcommerce.org. You will find a substantial number
of MTJC businesses right now, and more are joining. If your
favorite responsible businesses have not joined, encourage them
to do so. It's simple for them to join - they can go to the
web site and enter their information online. Our staff will
make sure the information is in order. Businesses do not pay
to join.
You will find other educational information at the MTJC Web
site, much of it in the form of links to other related activities
and organizations. Much excellent work has been done by others
regarding socially responsible consumption, investing, and life
styles. If you wish to become more informed in these areas,
you can follow the web site links.
We are delighted to be at the point of informing you of the
Grand Opening of More Than Just Commerce. And, this is just
the start! We are confident that MTJC will make a valuable
contribution to our community and want to work with you to make
that happen. Please use MTJC and give us continuing feedback
and suggestions. We look forward to hearing from you.
