Conchita's Ice Cream Now in its sixth year of business, Conchita's Ice Cream is a well-known location in downtown Watsonville for those in need of satisfying their sweet tooth. The store is a popular destination for local residents, Watsonville High, and Cabrillo College students who frequently stop by to order a milkshake or a cup of coffee. Conchita's Ice Cream is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Esther. Her family moved to Watsonville when she was six years old and as a child she used to play in the park and pretend she had her own ice cream store. Esther got the chance to accomplish her goal thanks to the El Pájaro Community Development Corporation's Business Incubator Program and a loan from the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union. Once she and her husband were accepted into the Business Incubator Program they began working with the Small Business Development Center, which in turn suggested they apply for their business loan at the SCCCU. They considered offers from two other banks, but the SCCCU gave them the best offer. "I feel comfortable at the Credit Union. Everyone is so friendly even after all this time," she says. "Ramiro (Rodriguez) is so wonderful. Anytime I go in, he stops whatever he's doing and takes the time to talk to me. He always makes sure to give me special attention." Owning a business has had a significant impact on Esther's family. The whole family works there, including her children. As a result, they have also become interested in studying business and her younger daughter has expressed a desire to start her own company as well. "She wants to be her own boss too!" proclaims Esther. The store has been doing well, due to Esther's vow to stay open rain or shine. "I want my customers to be able to rely on me, to know that they can always stop by and come in out of the cold." Her commitment to service and her friendly nature have fueled her success. "Plus my kids don't want to eat ice cream because they're lactose intolerant!" she laughs. "So think of all the money I've saved!" All joking aside, Esther confides, "This store is really the fulfillment of a dream. The two central goals I had in life were to have this shop and to see my children grow up. Now I've achieved both."
