Twenty Five Years of Community Service

In June, 1977, the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union opened its first savings accounts and embarked on what is now, in 2002, two and a half decades of community service. In those early days, the founders of the SCCCU crafted our guiding principle on their conviction that working for social and economic justice and empowering those who had been marginalized by the status quo would improve the quality of life of everyone in our community. Twenty-five years later, the Community Credit Union has attained remarkable achievements by maintaining a steadfast commitment to our mission to promote positive social and economic change.

In 1996 the SCCCU received the federal designation as a community development financial institution, thereby recognizing our accomplishments in meeting the needs of our low-income members. In 1997 we received a $1 million grant to open our Watsonville office, which has since experienced impressive growth. In 2000/2001, we received more than $1 million to support our Individual Development Account (IDA) Program serving very low-income people. In 2001, the SCCCU won the national Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action for our "Asset Development for Low-Income Members" program, a tribute to the effectiveness of our service. Finally, in 2003, the Community Credit Union will move to a larger building at 324 Front Street (the former Movies I and II building) to accommodate our expanding staff needs and to serve our 8200 members better.

We've come a long way from our first days in 1977 near Harvey West Park when we could (and did) keep our money in a cigar box. Our 25 years of service have proven beyond a doubt that community development credit unions can make a difference; not-for-profit, self-sufficient community development financial institutions have an impact, and micro-enterprise lending is effective.

Thank you to all our members, staff, volunteers and community for embracing our mission. Thank you for many years of support and believing in we can have a positive effect in our community!
